Lawzie doesn't so much sing songs as conjure them. Part Madeiran fado, part heartbreak Nashville, part grunge séance, her sound draws as easily from Patsy Cline as it does from Alice in Chains and Jeff Buckley, with a folkloric streak that owes more to Brigid and old woodland witches than to any Music Row songbook.

 

The result is a strange and beautiful contradiction: gorgeous, aching melodies wrapped around lyrics that are dark, personal, and often unflinchingly abrasive. Nothing about a Lawzie song is decorative - every line earns its place.

 

Her debut album, Take It Ma, was recorded in local legend John Cox's bedroom studio, and it shows: raw, intimate, and haunting, it plays less like a record and more like a documentary of a life being lived in real time.
